PARIS—French waste-and-water utility Veolia Environnement SA on Wednesday announced that its board of directors endorsed Chairman and Chief Executive Antoine Frérot after widespread speculation that he was to be ousted amid recent earnings setbacks.

The company, which reports annual earnings on Thursday, issued a one-sentence news release following a board meeting.

“The Board of Directors of Veolia Environnement… reaffirms the relevance of the strategic plan adopted in December 2011, and renews its confidence in the CEO, Antoine Frérot,” the company said.
