Aug. 12 — The brakes apparently failed on a garbage truck in Patterson, N.J., Thursday, sending the vehicle barreling down one of the city´s steepest hills and forcing sanitation workers to jump from the runaway truck, according to a report from the online Patterson Press.

“Considering that area, it´s unbelievable that nobody got seriously hurt,” Patterson Police Lt. Ronald Humphrey told the online newspaper, which called the incident a “trash collection miracle.”

While collecting garbage on Temple Street just before 11 a.m. Thursday, three workers from Suburban Disposal were on their truck when its brakes failed and the truck began rolling downhill.

The three workers jumped from the moving vehicle and then watched as the runaway truck speeded past a playground and through a busy intersection before jumping a curb, smashing through a fence and stopping just shy of the Passaic River.

The three workers were treated for minor injuries sustained when they leapt for safety, Humphrey told the Patterson Press.
